Treluyer challenges Sato domination

Takuma Sato, the scourge of 2001 Formula Three, has claimed pole position for the 11th Marlboro Masters at Zandvoort but he has tough opposition from fellow front row man Benoit Treluyer of France. The Japanese driver, leader of the British Formula Three championship, set the fastest time in qualifying, but the man from Le Mans, who is leading the Japanese Formula Three championship, was only 0.108s slower.

Sato set his time before going off the circuit in the morning qualifying session but "pole is perfect for me. I love this circuit and its quick, tricky corners." Treluyer, however, was happy to be on the front row. "I don't think pole is that important, but it is important to be on the front row," he said. Both drivers will be eager to slay the ghost of races past. Sato stalled at the start when on the second row last year, while Treluyer described his first visit as "a disaster" and was suffering jet leg last year.

Sato's time was 0.6s quicker than Bruce Jouanny, who starts behind him. The Frenchman went off in the first session and only did two laps, but fought back magnificently to set second fastest time even though the second session was slower. Tiago Monteiro sorted out his car to set second fastest time to Treluyer.
